Teaching Assistant (Alternate Title: Learning Coach) 26-27 SY

JOB SUMMARY
Join our dynamic team at Star Lab, where we deliver a world-class elementary education using best teaching practices and positive relationships. As a teaching assistant you will assist with all aspects of student work in the classroom under a teacher’s supervision. You will demonstrate lessons to students both individually and in groups, offer guidance as needed to students during independent practice, and help students with challenges or problems they are experiencing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to students during work time as directed by classroom teacher.
  • Collaborate with teacher to determine most effective approach for different children.
  • ​Receive training in the Science of Reading and teach a small reading group.
  • Provide supervision during outdoor activities and excursions.
  • Plan and teach specials (music, art, science) with hands-on lessons that connect to the curriculum.

Essential Functions

  • Provide just the right amount of support to help a student become more independent in the long term.
  • Help motivate students to persevere through difficulty.
  • Energetic approach allows you to engage with students during both learning and play.
  • Support diverse family backgrounds with a culturally rich perspective.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or the equivalent required, with a passion for both learning and teaching.
  • Experience: At least one year of experience managing groups of children in a school, camp, or childcare setting. Additional training provided as needed.
  • Skills: Fluency in English (written and spoken), collaborative with different personality types, and able to hold firm yet respectful expectations.
  • Certifications: Not required​

Teaching Schedule

  • Your days will be spent mostly in the classroom with recess duty outside at the end of every hour.
  • ​You will teach a small reading group and teach one period of "specials" every day
  • You will have additional supervision responsibilities on Fridays when teachers are in meetings, and you and the other assistant will run the day's activities.

Working Conditions

  • Active role involving significant movement and interaction with young learners.
  • Prolonged periods standing.
  • Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Dress for comfort as you will be outside a significant amount of time in the Florida weather.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $36,414 annually for work August - May, plus up to $2,000 year-end bonus for meeting school goals.
  • Benefits: $7,200 healthcare contribution ($600/month added to salary for a total salary of $43,614).

  • Full-time position (5 days a week, 8 hours a day), 190 days/year with summers and holidays off.
  • Ability to earn additional salary if you choose to work summer camp (June and July) - could earn up to additional $6000 for two months
